Light Distribution in LED Handrails: Symmetrical or Asymmetrical?
In this article, we’d like to introduce you to the various light distribution options available for our LED handrails. Even lighting across the walkway is essential for achieving the desired effect. We offer two different coverings, each with its own advantages.
Symmetrical Distribution with Opal Covering
The symmetrical covering, also known as opaque, frosted, or milky covering, diffuses light evenly in all directions, creating a continuous light strip along the handrail. Individual LED points are not visible, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing, uniform illumination. This option is not only cost-effective but also easier to install, making it an optimal solution for most applications. However, with wide stairways, bridges, or walkways, the symmetrical covering may lead to uneven lighting, as the light is not specifically directed.
Advantages
- Homogeneous Light Diffusion: Light is spread evenly in all directions, producing an aesthetically pleasing, continuous light strip.
- Invisible LED Points: The opal covering conceals individual LED points, creating a smooth and even illumination.
- Uniform Stair Lighting: With a handrail height of about 85 cm, the symmetrical covering provides even lighting approximately 60-70 cm away from the handrail.
Asymmetrical Distribution with Clear Covering
In contrast, the asymmetrical covering uses a special lens to direct light more toward a specific area, such as the staircase, with less light hitting the wall. This clear PMMA covering ensures an even light distribution across a broader area while minimizing stray light, making it particularly advantageous for wide staircases, bridges, or walkways. With targeted light direction, a single LED handrail could be sufficient to achieve the desired illumination. However, individual LED points are visible with this covering, so it doesn’t create a uniform light strip. Additionally, the asymmetrical covering requires more precise installation to ensure optimal light distribution.
Advantages
- Targeted Light Direction: The specially shaped lens directs light toward specific areas, optimizing lighting for staircases or other key sections.
- Wide Light Distribution: The asymmetrical covering allows for even lighting across a broader area, ideal for stairs with larger steps or wide pathways.
- Minimal Stray Light: The clear PMMA covering minimizes stray light, maximizing light intensity on the target area.
- Extended Lighting Range: With a handrail height of about 85 cm, the asymmetrical covering can illuminate stairways at a range of about 120-150 cm.
The Right Choice for Your Project
Choosing between symmetrical and asymmetrical light coverings depends on the specific requirements of your project. A symmetrical, opal covering offers even and gentle lighting, ideal for areas where homogeneous light diffusion is desired. On the other hand, the asymmetrical, clear covering is better suited for situations requiring targeted and broad light distribution, such as wide staircases or long corridors.
